Rare Conflict Issue Between FreeSync Premium Pro and Windows HDR (Case of AMD Radeon RX6800 and Dell S3422DWG)

Overview
This post documents a display issue that occurred when swapping a graphics card from Nvidia Geforce RTX to Radeon for bug verification in a game. It appears to be a conflict of features that normally shouldn’t occur.

Environment
PC: Windows 11, ASRock B650 Steel Legend, Ryzen 7900X, Radeon RX6800
Display: Dell S3422DWG (product page)
This display is a gaming monitor with VESA Display HDR 400 and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro features.

Symptoms
The following image was taken with a smartphone during the adjustment of Microsoft's Windows HDR Calibration.
When enabling Windows HDR, the display image becomes distorted, with poor color and image quality. There were no related errors or warnings in the event logs concerning the display or graphics card, so we investigated the issue as a hardware malfunction. This specific issue could not be found online.

Actions Taken
No inquiry was made to Dell. The issue was discovered after the warranty had expired, and there was little hope for a response from the manufacturer, whether it was an initial defect or a product malfunction. The effort to pursue that route would have been a waste of time.

Unsuccessful Actions

  • Display firmware update
  • Installing display drivers
  • Installing display control apps
These are available for download from the manufacturer’s support site (Dell 34 Curved Gaming Monitor S3422DWG)
  • Display settings reset

Successful Action
The issue was resolved by adjusting the display settings as follows:
In the Dell S3422DWG settings, turn off FreeSync Premium Pro.

One of the benefits of using Radeon is FreeSync Premium Pro, and since the display supports it, it is hard to believe that this issue arises with the combination of the two. It might be a result of a conflicting combination, and further investigation could be done. However, since this was unrelated to the bug investigation I was conducting, this is where the troubleshooting ends.
